“As flies to wanton boys are we to the gods. They kill us for their sport?”
Act 4, Scene 1, King Lear
This is one of the most often quoted lines from the tragedy of King Lear. This painting is a far cry from the poignant philosophy shared in the lines. The painting is playful and the rich palette of color makes it cheerful. Instead of being disempowered that we humans are flies to the gods, and gods play with us as young boys play with flies – we can remind ourselves that we are not that significant, we can always keep that child in ourselves alive. The blue color symbolizes the eternity of life and the bee motif on the wallpaper emphasizes the insect theme of the quotation.
