Long-Distance Relationship*

Long-Distance Relationship*

The Readers

“Every relationship is a long-distance relationship”

Even as you weave your days

            From the same loom

You may hold a different end of the garment

            You may sleep

On the two corners of the bed

Wrapped in different bubbles of dreams

You may be separated by heartbeats

You may be on the same page

            But of different books

            Like language is

            You will be inadequate

            For the other

And there will be a gap

            Just big enough to

            Cleave your heart

            Long enough to cause a

            A tear

Far enough for you to be distant.

*The line is taken from Sumana Roy’s much-acclaimed poem “Every Relationship is a long-distance Relationship”
